Responsible Gambling

Safer gambling help for Canadians: warning signs, provincial helplines, self-exclusion and support for families.

Gambling Should Be Entertainment

If it has become a way to make money, escape stress, or recover losses, it has stopped being entertainment. That shift is common, it is not a character failing, and help is free.

Warning Signs

  • Betting more than you planned, or more than you can comfortably lose
  • Chasing losses with bigger stakes to get back to even
  • Borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for bills
  • Hiding how much you play from people close to you
  • Gambling to cope with stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood
  • Feeling irritable when you cannot play
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy

One of these is worth noticing. Several together is worth acting on.

Tools That Actually Help

Deposit limits. Set them when you open an account, while you are thinking clearly. Every reputable operator offers them.

Loss and session limits. Cap what you can lose in a period, and how long a session runs.

Reality checks. A periodic pop-up telling you how long you have been playing. Unglamorous and effective.

Time-out. A short break of a day to a few weeks, usually instant.

Self-exclusion. A longer ban you cannot lift on impulse. Provincial platforms run their own schemes, and licensed operators must offer one.

A caution about the sites on this page: offshore operators are not part of any Canadian self-exclusion scheme, so a provincial exclusion will not block them. If you are self-excluding, blocking software such as Gamban or Betblocker covers what a provincial scheme cannot.

For Family and Friends

Living with someone else's gambling is exhausting and isolating. Gam-Anon and the provincial lines above support family members directly — you can call about someone else's gambling, and you do not need their permission.
